War on drugs essay introduction

The reason SA has a drug policy is to protect the rights of its citizens. Substance abuse endangers those rights collectively, and so the individual’s ‘right’ to use drugs is considered justifiably limited in terms of section 36 of the Constitution. This is supported by the Constitutional Court case Prince v. President of the Law Society of the Cape of Good Hope. 19 The appellant, a member of the Rastafari religion, sought permission to use cannabis in exercising his right to religious freedom. The panel was closely divided, but it was held that the blanket prohibition of cannabis was a justifiable limitation, possibly due to the high prevalence of cannabis use in the country. This article proposes to re-open the debate regarding the concept of prohibition of cannabis (and possibly other substances) and whether it is a justifiable limitation.

In the end, the war on drugs is not a war to be won or lost; it all boils down to personal choice; to do drugs, or not to do drugs. Hopefully the choice is not to do drugs. Also, the complete ceasing of illegal drug smuggling into the United States is virtually impossible. For one, the 2,000 miles of border separating the . and Mexico, as well as the coastal areas, make it tough to stop all drug trade from the south. I also suspect that government corruption on both sides of the border allow for many of these illegal substances to make their way into this nation, as it generates enormous amounts of money. After all, it is all about the money and power.

Two things: Mexico needs to change its strategy to fight organized crime, because the militarization strategy has not given the desired results. The second is a fierce battle against corruption with the maximum punishment and penalties against politicians and federal authorities, including members of the armed forces, who have operated hand in hand with the criminal organizations. We need to fight corruption from the top down and imprison those who are responsible for this crisis in Mexico. We need to see them in jail, so it sends a clear message to everyone that the corruption will no longer be tolerated.

Still, calling a truce between FARC and the government in the War on Drugs could have several positive results, especially if it serves as a model for other countries entrenched in conflict and the drug trade. The public health component, in particular, could be instructive for consumer countries considering strategies to suppress the demand for drugs. Similarly, crop substitution and the partnering role of the FARC could show a path for eradication in producer countries. Such policy shifts could have positive feedback effects for Colombia.
