When I was a college journalism student photographers were taught to shoot both horizontal and vertical images, several of each, because at the time the photo was shot there was no way to know the layout requirements. Cropping from horizontal to vertical, as was done here, drastically reduces the technical quality of the image. However, even with the crop it is evident that other people are in what is clearly a kitchen. The problem with this usage is that the photo, vertical or horizontal, is generally irrelevant to the point of the story.
