Students whose parents are not in the Foreign Service are eligible to participate if they are in grades nine through twelve in any of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, the . territories, or if they are . citizens attending high school overseas. Students may be attending a public, private, or parochial school. Entries from home-schooled students are also accepted. Previous first-place winners and immediate relatives of directors or staff of the AFSA and Semester at Sea are not eligible to participate. Previous honorable mention recipients are eligible to enter. $2,500 to the writer of the winning essay, in addition to an all-expense paid trip to the nation’s capital from anywhere in the . for the winner and his or her parents, and an all-expense paid educational voyage courtesy of Semester at Sea.

•       Essays must be between 2,000 and 10,500 words;
•       Submissions may be in Spanish or English
•       Submissions must have been produced to fulfill an undergraduate course or degree requirement (please specify course, degree, and institution; for thesis chapters, please add a thesis abstract).
•       Any work produced since August 1, 2016 is eligible for the competition.
•       Deadline: July 1, 2017

We are having an open house with a tour of our facility on Wednesday, June 9th from 10:00 . until 2:00 . with lunch provided. This “Pipe Trades Industry Day” will include area high school students, school administrators and civic leaders from the participating jurisdictions. There will be interactive learning, trainers covering green awareness, fire safety, career opportunities, and a chance to observe the competition. A remote radio broadcast, along with Washington, . area sports professionals, will be onsite to help encourage young men and women on choosing rewarding career paths.
