After the Kohl Government was defeated at the 1998 election , Merkel was appointed Secretary-General of the CDU , a key position as the party was no longer part of the federal government. [ citation needed ] Merkel oversaw a string of CDU election victories in six out of seven state elections in 1999, breaking the long-standing SPD-Green hold on the Bundesrat . Following a party funding scandal that compromised many leading figures of the CDU — including Kohl himself and his successor as CDU Leader, Wolfgang Schäuble — Merkel criticised her former mentor publicly and advocated a fresh start for the party without him. She was subsequently elected to replace Schäuble, becoming the first female leader of a German party on 10 April 2000. Her election surprised many observers, as her personality offered a contrast to the party she had been elected to lead; Merkel is a centrist Protestant originating from predominantly Protestant northern Germany, while the CDU is a male-dominated, socially conservative party with strongholds in western and southern Germany, and its Bavarian sister party, the CSU, has deep Catholic roots.
Thanks for sharing you story! I have been struggling with my weight since I was probably 11 or 12. I gained a fair amount of weight at that age and it took me a while (3 years, a 3-way mirror, and a size 16 skirt) to notice the effects my eating habits were having on my body. Now I have lost 30 pounds. It’s been really slow and sometimes frustrating because my body does not always cooperate with me, but I have done it in as healthy a way a possible. Every change I have made I made because I was ready to make it. My diet now, which is mostly vegetarian and almost vegan, with tons of fruits and veggies, has come about naturally because I wanted to eat that way. Its comforting and inspiring to see that you, who struggled with food, stress, and an eating disorder, seem to have attained balance in your life. I’m not there yet, but I hope that one day I can feel the same way that you seem to. So thanks for sharing your story with us, it means more to me than you might know :)
Mrs. Beeton , the original domestic goddess popularized jelly desserts in her best selling book Mrs. Beetons Book of Household Management . Yes, she is the one to blame, but still, when in moderation and fortified with alcohol, jellied desserts are light and refreshing. Chartreuse is an after dinner liqueur which dates back to the 17th century, a creation by 3 monks who each had one part, but not the entire recipe. It is available in green and yellow. While the green provides a nice color contrast to the peaches, it has more of a vegetable or herbal flavour, the yellow more honey. It is one of the handful of liquors that continues to age and improve in the bottle.
